Because of the elimination of some state funding, the Elgin School District needs to cut $123,000 from its budget. School officials say they plan to make the cuts without laying off staff or cutting programs. Instead, they say they plan to not fill two upcoming vacancies created by a retirement and a resignation that take effect in June. They say they believe they can do it painlessly, because enrollment at Elgin High School has been decreasing in recent years and the school has become overstaffed.
